(International Day of Charity)

We often feel that the world seems to be dominated by indifference and hostility. We rarely stop to think about the importance of doing good for others, how we can alleviate the suffering of those around us, and the need to build a more just and equitable world. Because, despite all our differences, there is one thing that unites us: the shared responsibility to care for and protect those who are our peers.

Charity, as an act of kindness towards those in need, is an act of humanity that knows no borders, that does not distinguish between races and that is present in all cultures. It is undoubtedly a truly universal language that we can all learn to speak, whatever our differences. Because, in the end, it is our actions that speak and we must be able to use all the means at our disposal to do good. 

Beyond our own day-to-day concerns, we cannot fail to pay attention to the suffering of those around us. The inequalities present in the world must always impel us to do what is right. Every gesture, every action, however small and humble, contributes to keeping the world speaking the same common language that is kindness.  

It is not all about donating money, it is also about giving our time, paying attention and listening, offering our selfless help and, in short, showing our love to those who need it most. All of this to achieve a priceless smile of gratitude that is capable of flooding our hearts, giving us a real purpose to move forward, to continue building a world where the word «humanity» is much more than a mere reference to our species. 

Around the world, thousands of charities work tirelessly to help those who need it most. Many of them do so with little or no resources in order to end poverty, end hunger and improve the lives of millions of people around the world. They do it without asking for anything in return, driven by the pillars of compassion, understanding, kindness and love. Pillars that are essential if we are not to lose the true sense of our own humanity and from a global solidarity movement.

We rarely think about how we are able to make a difference when we really mean it. We are capable of transforming the darkest moments into moments of happiness and hope. Because, without a doubt, our actions, however small they may be, can change entire lives, transform entire societies and build a better world based on solidarity, respect, equality, freedom and, also, on the inviolable human dignity of every person.

May that which best identifies us be the light that illuminates those who need it most. 

Because we can build a better world.

Let us be lights of hope.

(Día Internacional de la Beneficencia)

A menudo sentimos que el mundo parece estar dominado por la indiferencia y la hostilidad. Pocas veces nos paramos a pensar sobre la importancia de hacer el bien a los demás, de cómo podemos aliviar el sufrimiento de quienes nos rodean y de la necesidad de construir un mundo más justo y equitativo. Porque, a pesar de todas nuestras diferencias, hay algo que nos une: la responsabilidad compartida de cuidar y proteger a quien son nuestros semejantes.

La beneficencia, como acto de bondad hacia quien lo necesita, es un acto de humanidad que no conoce de fronteras, que no distingue razas y que está presente en todas las culturas. Sin duda, es un verdadero lenguaje universal que todos podemos aprender a hablar sean cuales sean nuestras diferencias. Porque, al final, son nuestras acciones las que hablan y debemos ser capaces de utilizar todos los medios a nuestro alcance para hacer el bien. 

Más allá de nuestras propias preocupaciones del día a día, no podemos dejar de prestar atención al sufrimiento de quienes nos rodean. Las desigualdades presentes en el mundo deben impulsarnos siempre a hacer lo que es correcto. Cada gesto, cada acción, por pequeña y humilde que sea, contribuye a que el mundo siga hablando ese mismo lenguaje común que es la bondad.  

No todo se reduce a donar dinero, también consiste en ofrecer nuestro tiempo, prestar atención y saber escuchar, ofrecer nuestra ayuda desinteresada y, en definitiva, mostrar nuestro amor a quienes más lo necesitan. Todo ello para conseguir dibujar una sonrisa de gratitud que no tiene precio y que es capaz de inundar nuestros corazones dándonos un propósito real para seguir hacia adelante, para seguir construyendo un mundo en donde la palabra “humanidad” sea mucho más que la mera referencia a nuestra especie. 

Por todo el mundo, miles de organizaciones benéficas trabajan de forma incansable para poder ayudar a quienes más lo necesitan. Muchas de ellas lo hacen sin apenas recursos para conseguir acaba con la pobreza, con el hambre y para mejorar las condiciones de vida de millones de personas en todo el mundo. Lo hacen sin pedir nada a cambio, movidos por los pilares de la compasión, la compresión, la bondad y amor. Pilares que son imprescindibles para no perder el verdadero sentido de nuestra propia humanidad y desde un movimiento de solidaridad global. 

Pocas veces pensamos en la manera en la que somos capaces de marcar la diferencia cuando realmente nos lo proponemos. Somos capaces de transformar los momentos más oscuros en momentos de felicidad y de esperanza. Porque, sin duda, nuestras acciones, por pequeñas que sean, pueden cambiar vidas enteras, transformar sociedades enteras y construir un mundo mejor desde la solidaridad, el respeto, la igualdad, la libertad y, también, desde la dignidad humana inviolable de toda persona. 

Que aquello que mejor nos identifica sea la luz que ilumine a quienes más lo necesitan. 

Porque podemos construir un mundo mejor.

Seamos luces de esperanza.
