(International Literacy Day)
Today is a call to action for a fundamental human right that has not yet been fulfilled for millions of people around the world. The right to literacy, i.e. the right to receive an education, is an inalienable right that must be guaranteed for all people, without exception.
It is unacceptable that in the 21st century, millions of people are victims of the injustice that denies them access to education so that they can participate fully in society. Education is the basis of equal opportunities and social justice, and therefore, to deny access to it is to favour inequality and marginalisation.
Governments and institutions around the world must assume their responsibility and take concrete steps to eradicate illiteracy. This not only means investing in literacy programmes so that the right to education can be exercised by everyone, it also includes guaranteeing quality education at any age.
But education is much more than learning to read or write. It also entails the ability to understand and analyse the world around us, to know how to differentiate between information and misinformation and, of course, to be able to participate actively in the social life of any democracy as part of responsible citizenship.
Today we reaffirm our commitment to work for a world where education is a universal right.
Because it is the basis of Equality and Justice.
Never a privilege.

(Día Internacional de la Alfabetización)
El día de hoy es un llamado a la acción en favor de un derecho humano fundamental que aún no se ha cumplido para millones de personas en todo el mundo. Y es que, el derecho de alfabetización, es decir, es derecho a recibir una educación, es un derecho inalienable que debe ser garantizado para todas las personas, sin excepciones.
Es inaceptable que en pleno siglo XXI, millones de personas sean víctimas de la injusticia que les niega el acceso a la educación para, de esta manera, poder participar plenamente en la sociedad. Porque la Educación es la base de la igualdad de oportunidades y la justicia social y, por tanto, negar su acceso es estar a favor de la desigualdad y la marginación.
Gobiernos e Instituciones de todo el mundo han de asumir su responsabilidad y tomar medidas concretas para erradicar el analfabetismo. Esto no solo supone tener que invertir en programas de alfabetización para que el derecho a la educación pueda ser ejercido por cualquier persona, también incluye la garantía de una educación de calidad y en cualquier edad.
Pero la Educación es mucho más que aprender a leer o escribir. También conlleva la capacidad de comprender y analizar el mundo que nos rodea, de saber diferenciar entre información y desinformación y, por supuesto, de poder participar de forma activa en la vida social de cualquier democracia como partes de una ciudadanía responsable.
Hoy reafirmamos nuestro compromiso de trabajar por un mundo donde la educación sea un derecho universal.
Porque es la base de la Igualdad y de la Justicia.
Nunca un privilegio.
