Dear Nieves;

Today would be your 22nd birthday and, for this reason, I want this letter to heaven to be an embrace of love for you that I share with all your family. It is difficult to find the right words to express all that I would like to say to you. 

You left a huge void in the lives and hearts of those who knew and loved you. What you went through was an act as cruel and vile as it was despicable and unjust. No one deserves to go through what you went through. That is why, from the bottom of my heart, I want to pay you this small tribute. 

Although we barely had time to get to know each other, everything your family has told me about you shows me that you were a wonderful person, full of love, dreams and hopes. Despite all the pain you carried inside you, you always showed your courage, your heart full of empathy and compassion for others.

I still remember that smile and that first hug the day we met. I’m not sure what you thought at the time. I was just a stranger to you who had come to your house to try to help you and, when I asked you «Do you want a hug?», I hope you didn’t think «Where did this guy come from?». And yet, that smile you had, along with your mother’s and your sister’s, while nursing your little nephew Marcos, quickly revealed to me that you were a being of light that I was privileged to know, to hug and, thanks to everything your family has told me about you throughout all this time, I have also learned to love. 

I still struggle to understand what happened. I wish I could have arrived in time, I wish I could have helped you, known you more and hugged you more. But I want you to know that you will always be in the hearts of those who loved you and love you, because your memory always accompanies us and gives us the strength to continue, especially your family who have not stopped claiming your name and demanding justice. 

They will continue to fight until the end, you will illuminate them from your star in the sky and I promise you that I will accompany them until the end. I will do it for you, Nieves, and for all your family. 

So, keep shining, little star.

Querida Nieves;

Es difícil encontrar las palabras adecuadas para expresar todo lo que me gustaría decirte. Hoy cumplirías 22 años y, por esta razón, quiero que esta carta al cielo sea un abrazo de amor hacia ti que comparto con toda tu familia.

Tu marcha dejó un vacío inmenso en la vida y en los corazones de quienes te conocieron y amaron. Lo que viviste fue un acto tan cruel y vil como despreciable e injusto. Nadie merece pasar por lo que tú pasaste. Por eso, desde lo más profundo de mi corazón, quiero rendirte este pequeño homenaje. 

Aunque apenas nos dio tiempo a conocernos, todo lo que tu familia me ha contado acerca de ti me demuestra que eras una persona maravillosa, llena de amor, de sueños y de esperanzas. A pesar de todo el dolor que llevabas dentro, mostraste siempre tu valentía, tu corazón lleno empatía y compasión hacia los demás.

Aún recuerdo esa sonrisa y ese primer abrazo el día que nos conocimos. No sé bien qué pensaste en ese momento. Yo solo era un desconocido para ti que había llegado a tu casa para intentar ayudarte y, cuando te pregunté “¿Quieres un abrazo?”, espero que no pensaras “¿De dónde ha salido este?”. Y, sin embargo, esa sonrisa que tenías, junto con la de tu madre y tu hermana, mientras amamantaba a tu sobrinito Marcos, me reveló rápidamente que eras un ser de luz al que tuve el privilegio de conocer, de abrazar y, gracias a todo lo que tu familia me contado de ti a lo largo de todo este tiempo, también he aprendido a querer. 

Todavía me cuesta entender qué fue lo que pasó. Ojalá hubiese llegado a tiempo, ojalá hubiese podido ayudarte, conocerte más y abrazarte más. Pero quiero que sepas que siempre estarás en los corazones de quienes te quisieron y te quieren, porque tu recuerdo siempre nos acompaña y nos da fuerzas para continuar, especialmente a tu familia que no ha dejado de reivindicar tu nombre y pedir justicia.

Seguirán luchando hasta el final, tú les iluminarás desde tu estrella en el cielo y yo te prometo que les acompañaré hasta el final. Lo haré por ti, Nieves, y por toda tu familia. 

Así que, sigue brillando, pequeña estrella.
