Stay a Little Longer
(World Suicide Prevention Day)
I know. There are days when getting out of bed feels like far too much. They are the days when everything feels unbearably heavy, and even the things that once made us smile seem impossibly far away. The exhaustion builds until it makes us believe that there is no way out, that the pain will stay with us forever, and that perhaps the only way to put an end to everything we are feeling is to disappear ourselves. Yet it is precisely when our own minds convince us that there can be no different tomorrow that we most need to remember that suffering can distort the way we see things, making us believe that a situation is permanent when, in reality, we are simply going through one of the most difficult chapters of our lives.
I do not want to speak to you from some pedestal, nor tell you that you have to be strong, that you have to smile, or that everything will somehow be alright simply because someone keeps repeating it to you. I know there are moments when those words can actually hurt, because when someone is suffering deeply, they do not need to be told how easy it may look from the outside to carry on; they need someone willing to sit beside them and understand that some wounds require time, support and professional help. That is why I want to speak to you as one person to another, without grand speeches and without pretending to have all the answers, because I also know what it means to go through periods when looking ahead feels almost impossible, and when what seems obvious to everyone else becomes completely out of reach for the person who is suffering.
Perhaps right now you cannot imagine what your life will look like in a few years, or even in a few months, and perhaps you cannot find enough reasons to believe that things can change. You do not have to solve your whole life today, nor do you have to find answers to every question running through your mind. Sometimes all we need is to give ourselves enough time to reach the following day and to allow someone to help us through what we can no longer bear on our own. Asking for help is not defeat; acknowledging that we are suffering does not make us any less worthy, and allowing someone else to stand beside us does not mean that we have lost our strength. There is enormous courage in saying that we cannot carry on alone and deciding that we need someone to reach out a hand to us.
We need a society in which speaking about mental health does not lead to shame, fear or silence, a society that understands that behind many people who appear strong there may be suffering that nobody knows about, and that behind an “I’m fine” there may be someone who has been trying to survive in silence for far too long. We need properly resourced public mental health services, professionals who are able to listen and support people before despair reaches a critical point, but we also need something that no institution can ever replace: learning to truly look at the people around us and ask them how they are, remaining by their side when the answer is not the one we had hoped to hear.
Perhaps someone who is withdrawing from others does not need to be criticised for their distance, but reminded that there is still a place for them to return to; perhaps someone who has stopped answering messages does not need more questions, but simply needs to know that there is someone willing to wait; perhaps someone who has spent far too long saying that they can cope with everything needs to hear, at last, that they are under no obligation to cope with everything; and perhaps an apparently small conversation can become that almost invisible thread that enables someone to make it through another day, ask for help and eventually discover that what once seemed like the end was only one of the darkest moments in their story.
If you are going through something that feels unbearable today, I am not going to ask you to find the strength to carry on for the rest of your life, nor am I going to demand that you immediately find a reason to smile. I would simply ask you to give yourself a little more time, not to face that pain alone, and to find someone you can talk to, whether that is someone you trust or a professional who can help you carry what, right now, feels far too heavy. You do not have to know where you are going yet, because at certain moments in life what matters is not knowing the destination, but finding a way to keep moving until a little light begins to appear again.
There are conversations you have not yet had, people who have not yet entered your life, places you have never seen and moments you cannot even begin to imagine right now. There are embraces you have not yet received, mornings that have not yet arrived and opportunities that can only exist if you remain here long enough to find them. Perhaps one day you will look back and realise that the night that seemed endless eventually passed, that the pain which appeared to occupy every corner of your life eventually made room for other things, and that the person who once believed they could not carry on managed to do so, not because they were invincible, but because they found help, time and a reason strong enough to stay.
So, please, do not make a permanent decision from the darkest place you have ever been in. Allow yourself to wait, allow someone to stand beside you, and give yourself the chance to discover that your story still has pages you have not written. You may not be able to see it today, but your life is so much bigger than this moment, and what you are feeling right now does not have to determine who you will become tomorrow.
Because you have not yet experienced all the good things that may still find their way to you.
You do not have to walk this road alone; you only have to ask for someone to walk beside you.
So, please, stay a little longer.
